Winter Cup Round 5

Round five of the Winter Cup was played on Wednesday 4 July and there was some good old American fireworks on board two.

On board 1 Katrine Metge won against Pauline Thomas to extend her lead to an unbeatable lead of 1.5 points with 1 round to play. Board 2  was John McRae vs John Worn and with a big rating difference John Worn was expected to prevail. However John McRae has been playing well in this tournament with his only loss in round 4 against Katrine. The game was long finishing about 11.30pm after 80 moves with John McRae pushing pawns to the six rank with the enemy king in front on the back rank, he was able to checkmate.

I would also like to congratulate Rhoslyn Lapworth getting her first points by drawing with Dave Misileki and welcome to a new member James Lefe’e a brother to Solomon, William and Caleb. There will be a few battles of brothers in the future.

Leading scores are –

A GRADE

1. Katrine Metge   5.0

2. John McRae      3.5

B GRADE

1. William Lefe’e  3.0

2. Pauline Thomas  2.5

The final round of the winter cup will be this Wednesday then follow the next week by The Spring (Ewen Green) Rapid.
