Winter Cup Round 5

Round five of the Winter Cup was played on Wednesday 4 July and there was some good old American fireworks on board two.

On board 1 Katrine Metge won against Pauline Thomas to extend her lead to an unbeatable lead of 1.5 points with 1 round to play. Board 2  was John McRae vs John Worn and with a big rating difference John Worn was expected to prevail. However John McRae has been playing well in this tournament with his only loss in round 4 against Katrine. The game was long finishing about 11.30pm after 80 moves with John McRae pushing pawns to the six rank with the enemy king in front on the back rank, he was able to checkmate.

I would also like to congratulate Rhoslyn Lapworth getting her first points by drawing with Dave Misileki and welcome to a new member James Lefe’e a brother to Solomon, William and Caleb. There will be a few battles of brothers in the future.

Leading scores are –

Winter Cup Round 3

Last night we played the third round (out of six).

The top board was a clash of the 2 top seeds – Katrine Metge vs John Worn. It was fairly even for most of the game with Katrine applying the pressure which eventually bought the mistake from John and allowed Katrine to win a piece after a small combination. On board 2 it was Paul Postma vs John McRae which John won after winning a piece and then checkmating.

Although the Winter Cup is being played as one group, all players with a club rating under 1150 are playing for the B Grade cup. Here are the leaders in each group –

A GRADE

1. Katrine Metge  3.0

2.  John McRae    2.5

3= John Worn, Paul Norris & Yash Narayan  2.0

B GRADE

1=  Graeme Coleman & William Lefe’e  2.0

3. Pauline Thomas  1.5

The draw for the fourth round is as follows unless there are any absences (please let me know if you cannot make it so i can redo the draw).

Handicap Tournament Round 5 & 6

With Dave Misileki losing the final 2 rounds allowed Yash Narayan and William Lefe’e to catch him. These 3 players were in a tie for 1st on 4 points. William missed the first two rounds so he actually won all the games he played. Congratulation to these players – there might be a fight over who gets the cup!!!

Next week (6th June) will be back to normal chess. It will be the 1st of 6 rounds of the winter cup and the games will be 1 hour + 30seconds from move 1. We are playing as one group using the Swiss format but there will be an A and B grade winner. I will determine the split into grade after the 1st round.

PLEASE NOTE – Because we have juniors playing I will be beginning on time so you must let me know if you are entering. I will be doing the draw at 7.30pm and if you arrive after this then you will not have a game (unless you have already entered by letting me know). So you need to let me know by phone, text or email anytime before Wednesday 7.30pm (Home phone and email before 5.30pm Wednesday). Or be at the club before 7.30pm.

Handicap Tournament Rounds 3 & 4

Played Wednesday 23 May 2012.

There was an important clash in round 3 between Yash Narayan and Dave Misileki in which Dave won. After Dave also winning round 4 this left him on top with 4 wins. Yash also won his 4th round so he is still in touch with 3 point in second. There are a few players on 2 points – Paul Postma, John Worn, Solomon Lefe’e and William Lefe’e. It is worth noting that Solomon and William missed the first 2 rounds so they have won all the games they have played.

This Wednesday will be the final 2 round and then on the 6 June we will begin the Winter Cup. I will tell you more about this after the conclusion of the Handicap Tournament.
