Summer Cup Round 1

Hello all chess lovers and welcome to the 2013 competition at Papatoetoe Chess Club.

The first round of the Summer Cup was played last night with 6 boards. It is in swiss format so in the first round the top half played the bottom half. Five of the boards were won by the higher seed so are leading on one point –

Katrine McCarthy

John Worn

Andrew Michael

Paul Norris

Paul Postma

Congratulation to Pauline Thomas who got a draw against the higher rated John McRae in a long game that went past 11pm.

Also a warm welcome to newcomers (to Papatoetoe) Andrew Michael and James Anderson. I hope they both enjoy many challenges.

Welcome to Paul Postma as the new club captain and remember if you are in the competition and cannot turn up to a round please text Paul to let him know. This prevents you being paired to play somebody who won’t get a game when you don’t turn up. As well if you have not entered in the first round but wish to join in, you are very welcome but you either need to be at the club by about 7.20pm or text Paul to enter you in the tournament.

Paul’s number is 0210330548

The club is 2784516

My number (Barry) is 0274506140

2013 AGM and Prize Giving

Welcome to a new year of CHESS BATTLES!!!

I hope you are all refreshed and ready to go.

This Wednesday 13/2/2013 at 7pm we are having the AGM and straight after will be the prize giving for last years winners. Please try and get along to this to congratulate all the winners. After the formalities we will play some casual chess or whatever people want. The next week will start the serious stuff when the summer cup starts.

If you are interested in helping the club as an officer or a committee member please make it know. We need new blood! and new ideas.

Secretary Needed

I ‘m standing down this year and only looking after the Juniors and Library.

[a] Job is basically taking the minutes at Club Meetings and applying for funding for Rent [2014] ,equipment, and events.

[b] Minutes and Funding Books are in the cupboard at the club.[the Clubs Seal is in the bookcase]

[c] There are usually only 2 or 3 funding rounds per year, and it takes about a month or more before you get a reply,so it pays to start early.

[d] With some you can apply online , but most have a form to fill in.

[e] They each have a list of the areas they cover and the type of things they support. There is a Book showing all the funding societies  – info in the Funding Books at the club

Assistant Treasurer Needed

Because I could be working night-shift this year,we need someone to help with some of the jobs I usually do at the Club.

[a] Collect Subs – each night and mark them in the Attendance Sheet so we have a record for the clubs accounts.

[b] Register all new players – name,address,phone,email.

[c]Give a receipts – for a Year Subs payment and NZCF registration.Players can pay registration at tournaments when they enter [no extra charge now],email me [email protected] any who pay at club and I will forward a cheque to NZCF.

[d]Bank all money collected – ASB Account 12-3028-0428483-00 and identify with Seniors Subs.

[e] I will still pay our NZCF and ACA – Affilation Fee and will enter one team in each of the A, B, Junior and Lightning Inter-Club Games. I will still set up the room, and our boards, sets and clocks, – BUT SOMEONE ELSE will have to organize and captain the teams in these events.

[f] Lastly – buy Tea,Milk and Biscuits each week for Seniors and mark the amount spent in the Attendance Sheet for our annual accounts.  David Taylor will buy sugar, milo, raro and biscuits for the Juniors, as well as collect their subs and do their Banking.

Joe Sapeta Rapid Rounds 5 and 6

Last Wednesday saw Katrine Metge clear out from the pack while others fell by the wayside. Katrine first beat Barry Hooton and then William Lefe’e while John Worn beat Graeme Coleman but then fell to Solomon Lefe’e. Solomon in the meantime worked his way up the leader board by first beating his brother, James and then John Worn.

The leading scores with two rounds to go are –

Katrine Metge  5.5

John Worn        4.5

Solomon Lefe’e  4.0

Remember next Wednesday we are having a break from the Rapid and playing another Blitz. Come along and have some fun – everybody to play everybody. Just to make it a little different from the other Blitz we may make it a 5+3 if the majority agree.
