Calendar for 2014

Papatoetoe chess will begin the first round of the Summer cup on the 12th February. See calendar below.

There will be some change this year in the way tournaments are conducted. The issue has arisen because some long games are going on too late at night. Following is a list of these changes including one not related to the time issue –

1. This years club champs will have the A grade running as a separate tournament. The top six entries will play a double round robin hence club champs will be ten rounds this year to accommodate this. There has been discussion to allow non members into the club champs so this could alter the format if we get many non members entering and we are left with only a few members in the A grade. I will keep you posted on this.

2. All the tournaments (except the Club Champs) have had the increments reduced from 30 seconds to 10 seconds to help reduce the length of long games.

3. Strict start times. This is not new rules but in the past they have not been enforced. You are expected to arrive at or before 7.30pm so the draw will be done and the round started as soon as possible – start will be by 7.45 but earlier if possible. There are many things that need to change in order for this to happen and I will list these below. PLEASE REMEMBER THESE RULES ARE SO YOUR FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS CAN TURN UP KNOWING THEY WILL HAVE A GAME AND GET HOME AT A RESONABLE TIME.  We also have younger members playing in the seniors that cannot stay late.

a) There is no casual play on the tournament boards. You can easily grab a spare set and set up on another table.

b) The following rules do not mean you cannot be late but your clock will be started and you will have 30 minutes or when your time runs out for shorter games, before your game is forfeited.

c) On the first night (first round) of a tournament you will need to be on time to enter or contact the club if you are going to be a bit late. If you haven’t done either of these you will not be in the first round.

d) For subsequent rounds once you are in the tournament we will be assuming you are coming and you will be paired and the rule in b) will apply.

e) Once you are in a tournament but know you will not be coming for any particular round please let the club know. This is so we can prevent you being paired and then your fellow club member isn’t waiting for someone who will not turn up.

f) The rule e) is one rule that is often ignored by some members (some are very good). If you habitually do not turn up and do not let anybody know we may take you out of a round in future if you have not arrived on time. Of course if you do arrive you will not have a game.

g) We have a 15 minute break about 9pm. The 15 minute time will be strictly adhered to at which time clocks are restarted. This does not mean you have to sit down at that time, just that the clock will be ticking.

I hope these rules do not seem too harsh but remember they are necessary so everyone can enjoy the club and we have an environment that is acceptable to the majority.

One last thing before the calendar. Not everybody will know of these rule changes so we have agreed that there will be a little leeway on the first night.

Club Nights Starting 5 February 2014

Our club is back underway on the 5th February. We will be starting at 7.30 with the AGM and then the prize giving. After this play some casual chess but please come even if you are not receiving a cup because we should support all the winners.

We will have a small door prize which we will draw after the prize giving.

There will be a change in our club champs this year. The 6 top rated players (club rating) will split away and play a double round robin for the A grade. All others will play for the B and C grade in one swiss tournament. So if you want to play in the A grade get your rating up into the top 6. There are 3 tournaments that will effect your standard rating before the club champs – Summer cup, Autumn cup and Winter cup.

We will allow non-club players to enter our club champs this year, they will pay the normal $3/night fee. Non-club players will not have a club rating so we will use their NZ rating.

I hope you all have a great year and I will see you on the 5th February.

New Zealand Chess Championship Major Open 2014

The  New Zealand Major Open  Championship was played at Alexandra Park over 9 half days.  The Papatoetoe Chess Club  had the most players ever (5) competing –   Henry Vital, Andrew Michael, Alexander Laughland, Mana Garland and  JohnMcRae.

Henry was going have nice win until his phone went off causing  him miss out on a very valuable  point, ending on (6) points. A very good result in strong company.  Please ensure your phone is off!!

Andrew Michael  had some very long games and ended with 4.5 points. This should see him get a few more rating  points.

Alex has not played for some time  but still managed  to get 4 points. Hopefully he can make it to the Club for some of the  tournament cups that we  play though out the year.

Mana also has not being  playing as much as he would like to. He said all the Juniors gave him a tough time. He ended up with 3.5 points.

John put up two  huge efforts  in  rounds 1 and 2  to get 2 draws, one being against  the South Australian Junior champion. He ended up with 3 points – much to everybody’s surprise.

Well done everyone.
