Papatoetoe Junior Rapid Open 2013

On Saturday the 7 December we had our annual rapid open for seniors and juniors. This year we held it at the Panmure Community Centre on the same day as the Panmure Santa Parade. As far as I am aware the clash did not cause any problems.

The junior tournament was six rounds and we used a tie-breaker system recommended by FIDE. This is because we cannot have split prizes.

Congratulations to the overall winner, 10 year old, Jack Sun on 5.5 points. The other cup winners for the overall tournament are-

2nd Leo Zhang      4.5 points (10 years)

3rd Raymond Huang 4.5 points (7 years)

Book prize for 4th went to Oliver Picken on 4.0 points

I would also like to mention the others on 4.0 points but missed out on an overall prize because of the tie-break system –

Darrick Pan

Rebekah Massey

Allan Han

Emily Massey

Lucas Salazar Eyre

Grade prizes were as follows –

12 years plus

David Xu 5 points.

Please note that this age group was ineligible for the cup prizes so David was unable to take 2nd place.

Under 12

Rebekah Massey 4.0 points

Under 10

Sasha Ghadiali  3.5 points

Under 8

Allan Han 4.0 points

Top Girl

Rebekah Massey 4.0 points

We had 28 juniors all together and there were no issues so I would like to congratulate all the entrants on their great sportsmanship.

Santa Parade and Prize Giving 2013

For the last 4 Years at least the Santa Parade has

been held on the 2nd Wed in Dec. our Junior Prize

Giving night.

Therefore we moved the Junior Prize Giving to the

2nd Tues in Dec, and informed the Bowling Club.

This Year they moved the Santa Parade to the

1st Wed in Dec – our last Junior Chess night.

We didnt know until Monday 2nd Dec. too late

to make any changes.

SO WE WILL HOLD OUR      JUNIOR PRIZE GIVING  ON

TUESDAY  10TH  Dec. @  6pm – 7pm.

Going Over Games

One of the main reasons for recording games is so we can relay them. Try to find improvements, look for things we missed, maybe find out why we lost, or if we won were we just lucky.

J C C Round 4

BLACK to play – played 26. … Rgxf2+ 27.Kg1 Rxh2 28.Rxf3 Rxc2 29.a4 Rxb2 30.a5 Rhc2 31.Rf1 –   did Black miss anything ? YES  Mate in 2 – can you see it?

J C C Round 4 [b]

BLACK to play – played 31. … Ra2  Can you see anything better?

Correct was 31. … Rg2+ 32.Kh1 Rh2+ 33.Kg1 Rbg2#

GAME continued – this position was reached – WHITE to play What would you play?

J C C Round 4 [c]

WHITE to play – played 46.Ke1 ? and lost after … Ke3 47.Kf1 f2 48.Kg2 Ke2 49.Kg3 f1Q

Correct was  46.Kf1! Ke3  47.Ke1!  – King Opposition – King opposite King with an odd number of squares between them – if his King has to move – You have the opposition. 47. … f2+ 48.Kf1 Kf3  DRAW.

J C C  ROUND 5    Black to play    –  has the advantage and should win.

J C C Round 5

BLACK  played  53. … f5  trying to force an exchange and win with the extra pawn, but he missed something –

Stronger was  … Kh4  54.Kf4 f6!  55.Kf3 g5  and Black wins the pawn. 56.Kg2 Kxg4.  The GAME continued –

54.gxf5 Kxf5  55.Kg3    what should Black play now?

J C C Round 5 [b]

BLACK  played  55.  … g5   thinking that was good enough.

RULE OF THUMB – “GET YOUR KING INFRONT OF YOUR PAWN”

55. … Kg5  King Opposition – King opposite King -odd number of squares between them- if his King has to move – You have the Opposition.

56.Kf3 Kh4  57.Kf4 g5+  58.Kf3 Kh3  and on down to Queen.

GAME  CONTINUED –   56.Kf3! g4+  57.Kg3 Kg5  58.Kg2 Kh4  59.Kh2 g3+  60.Kg2 Kg4  61.Kg1 Kf3  62.Kf1 g2+  63.Kg1 Ke2  64.Kxg2   DRAW

Simplify to Win [b]

Sometimes your advantage does not become clear until you reduce the number of pieces on the board. Basically – Simplify to Win .

Junior Club Champs Round 3 2013

Now instead of playing … Bb7+ and chasing the King around for another 25 moves the “easy way” was – Simplify to Win  eg.

1. … Rxe1  2.Rxe1 Rxe1  3.a4 Rc1  clear the way for the c pawn  4.a5 Rxc3  5.h4 Ra3  6.Kh3 c4  7.Kg4 c3  8.h5 c2  9.f4 c1Q  10.g4 Qh1#

Simplify to Win [a]

When you are ahead in material, the “easy way”, is to exchanged off until your extra pieces or pawns can not be stopped.  Basically   Simplify to Win

Junior Club Champs Round 1 2013

Here Blacks plan should be to exchange Queens, then advance the b pawn. When his King moves to stop it, push the f pawn. He can not stop both  eg.

1. … Qc1  2.Qxc1 Bxc1   3.Kf2 b5  4.Ke2 f5  5.gxf5 gxf5  6.Kd3 b4  7.Kc4 f4

– without the help of the bishop, king or other pawns, one of these pawns will Queen

8.Kxb4 f3  9.Kc3 f2  10.Kd3 f1Q+ 11.Kc2 Qxh3  12.Kxc1 Qh2  13.Kd1 Kf6  14. Kc1 Ke5  15.Kb1 Kd4  16.Ka1 Kc3 17.Kb1 Qb2#

Juniors – K + R v K

Many people still struggle to win a King and Rook against a King ending.

A simple way is “King Opposition”- King opposite King and check with the Rook from a distance. This method is also good for K + Q v  K  ending, just use the Queen as a Rook. Remember HE must step into King Opposition, before you can check him,and drive him back. If he dodges back and forth, play a waiting move with the rook, wait for him to step into King Opposition, then check him. If his King gets too close to your Rook move it ” far away”, but keep him cut off.

White to play

1.Rd5   1st cut off the amount of board he can use. [1.Re1 is also good ,then drive him to the h file] Ke6 2.Kd4 Kf6 3.Ra5 move the Rook “far away”from his King Ke6 4.Rb5 waiting move – allow him the chance to step into King Opposition. Kf6 5.Ke4 follow his King Kg6 6.Kf4 Kh6 7.Kg4 Kg6 – King Opposition 8.Rb6+ Kf7 9.Kg5 follow his King Ke7 10.Kf5 Kd7 11.Ke5 Kc7 12.Rh6 move the Rook “far away” Kd7 13.Rg6 waiting move Kc7 14.Kd5 Kb7 15.Kc5 Ka7 16.Kb5 Kb7 King Opposition 17.Rg7+ Kc8 18.Kb6 follow his King Kd8 19.Kc6 Ke8 20.Kd6 Kf8 21.Ra7 move the Rook “far away” Ke8 22.Rb7 waiting move Kf8 23.Ke6 Kg8 24. Kf6 Kh8 25.Kg6 Kg8 King Opposition 26.Rb8#
