SUMMER CUP ROUND 4

Round 4 was played 29/3/2012.

The top boards were Solomon Lefe’e vs John Worn and Paul Norris vs Barry Hooton.

Unfortunately, new member Solomon, was unable to make it to the game on time due to circumtances beyond his control so lost by default. On board 2 it was a battle of mistakes and in the end Paul and Barry had a draw.

The 5th and final round will be Wednesday 7/3/2012 and John Worn has an unassailable lead on 3.5 point. Second is Paul Norris, who is the only person who can catch John Worn, on 2.5 points and following Paul on 2 point is no less than 8 players.

The week after, Wednesday 14/3/2012, will be the start of the summer rapid cup. More on this soon.

Summer Cup Round 3

The third round of the Summer Cup was played on Wednesday the 22 February. The number of boards increased from last week to 8 with the arrival of some new members and some old members returning.

The battle on the top two boards saw John Worn (white) defeat Paul Norris and Hans Gao (black) defeat John McRae.

The leaders are now John Worn on 2.5 points followed by Solomon Lefe’e, Paul Norris and Hans Gao on 2 points. Both Solomon and Hans missed the first round but have won both rounds since. It is exciting to see that Solomon who is a new comer to club chess, has started with two wins….congratulations…. although this certainly will mean a harder game in round 4.

Again just a reminder if you are in this competition and are unable to attend round 4 please either ring the club on Wednesday before 7.30pm 278 4516 or ring or text Barry on 527 7250 or 0274 506 140.

Summer Cup Round 2

On Wednesday 15 Februrary Papatoetoe Chess Club played the second round of the summer cup. There were six boards playing and five boards obtained a full point. They were-

Paul Norris, Hans Gao, Paul Postma, Satnam Singh and Solomon Lefe’e.

After two rounds the outright leader is Paul Norris on 2 points, followed closely by John Worn and John McRae on 1.5 points.

Round three will be played 22 Februrary – members and visitors are welcome to join the tournament at anytime.

Please remember if you are in the tournament and cannot make round 3 then ring the club on 2784516 before 7.30pm or Barry on 0274 506 140 (a text is fine).

Consultation Game 2011

On 16th  November 2011 we had our Consultation Chess game which was a lot of fun.

Team B, playing White, greatly encouraged by the thought of gaining either the Brilliancy Prize or the Suicide Prize, quickly resolved to gain one or the other (if nothing else) and sacrificed their Knight for no apparent reason on move 4!

Team A responded confidently and a thoroughly interesting game ensued.

Team B went on to a surprising win!  They were awarded the Brilliancy Prize and the match but lost on points which were arbitrarily awarded or deducted for cheek, abuse, baiting the other team, self-congratulatory remarks etc.
